Frequently asked questions
Guidance for users, caregivers, and clinicians on fitting, comfort, and care for the Madglove Assist.
My fingers are overextending at the DIP and PIP joints — what can I do?
Adding small finger splints for both the DIP and PIP joints is recommended. Oval 8-style splints work well and can be worn underneath the Madglove Assist sleeves. They come in metal or plastic — whichever is more comfortable and budget-friendly. The splints act as a gentle reminder to keep fingers within a safe range of motion.
My knuckles (MCP joints) are overextending — how do I address this?
- Extra band: Ask your technician to add a non-stretchy band along the palm region over the MCP area to prevent gaps between hand and glove.
- Knuckle-bender: A small device your technician can make that gently bends the fingers at the main knuckles using soft elastic or spring tension.
- Fit: Ensure the glove is properly fitted and not sliding up your hand.
- Tension: Avoid too much tension via the adjusting wheel. Work with your clinician to find the right level.
I'm experiencing pressure points — is that normal, and how do I manage it?
Pressure points are quite common when first using the glove. Start by wearing it for only 15–30 minutes and gradually increase wearing time as your skin adjusts. Regularly check the skin under the glove for redness and gently adjust the wrist straps as needed.
The glove feels warm — what should I do?
Because the Madglove Assist is made of breathable materials, it can sometimes feel warm. If you are sensitive to warmth, take the glove off periodically to let your hand cool down before putting it back on.
My fingers are not going straight — how do I fix the alignment?
The glove has sliders on the top positioned over the MCP joints. Make sure they are properly adjusted and aligned with your fingers. If your fingers are not going straight, try adjusting the sliders in the opposite direction.
The wrist support seems off-center — what does that mean?
The wrist support should sit aligned on the inside of your arm, running straight down. If it is noticeably off-center and uncomfortable, this may indicate the brace size is not quite right. Check the size guide before ordering a different size.
There's a gap on the pinky side near my MCP knuckles — is that a problem?
A gap on the pinky side suggests the brace may be slightly too large. This is not necessarily harmful if comfort and function are otherwise good. If you experience issues, consult the size guide.
The thumb strap feels too long — can I shorten it?
Yes, but leave at least 3 cm of extra length. After cutting, heat the end of the cord to prevent fraying. It is strongly advised to have your technician do this rather than attempting it at home.
I need extra wrist stability — is there an option for that?
Yes. The wrist support includes a designated splint pocket. Ask your technician to insert an extra splint for additional stability.
I'm losing tension or the tension feels uneven between fingers — what do I do?
Use the tension wheel to adjust until the centerpoint lines up with the white zigzag stripe on the back of the glove. Put the glove on, remove the plug first, then reset the tension on each finger one by one.
A slider has broken — can I still use the glove?
Yes, the glove can still be used even if a slider breaks. If you find the slider essential, contact Madglove through the contact form on the website.
How long should the glove last, and what if it wears out early?
The Madglove Assist is designed to last up to 2 years under normal use when cleaned according to the instructions. If you experience abnormal wear and tear, contact Madglove via the contact form.
What conditions is the Madglove Assist designed for?
The Madglove Assist is designed for individuals with upper limb and hand disabilities such as muscle spasticity, weakness, loss of movement control, and muscle contractures — common after stroke or other neurological conditions.
Do I need a prescription or a clinician to get the Madglove Assist?
Yes. A prescription from a rehabilitation specialist is required and fitting must be performed by an orthopedic technician. In the Netherlands, Madglove Assist is reimbursable under basic health insurance when ordered by a certified health specialist.
Is the glove machine washable?
Yes. The Madglove Assist can be washed in a washing machine on a low-temperature cycle. Follow the cleaning instructions to ensure the glove lasts its full lifespan.
What sizes are available and how do I choose the right one?
The Madglove Assist is available in Small, Medium, and Large for both left and right hands. Use the size guide on the Madglove website to find the best fit.
Is the Madglove Assist covered by basic insurance?
Yes. The Madglove Assist is eligible for reimbursement under the Dutch basic healthcare package when prescribed by a certified healthcare provider. This means no direct payment from you — your glove can be fully covered when your therapist or clinician makes the request.
Who submits the insurance claim?
Your specialist handles all the paperwork. You do not need to worry about forms or applications — your physiotherapist, rehabilitation doctor, or orthotic technician will manage the reimbursement process on your behalf.
Can I use the glove at home?
Absolutely. The Madglove Assist is specifically designed for home independence. Please note that reimbursement through basic insurance applies strictly for home use.
Do I need a wrist splint as well?
The glove works as-is for most users. If additional wrist support is needed, your specialist can provide an orthotic wrist splint separately. This splint is not included with the initial purchase of the Madglove Assist.
